Landscapes and Illusions

Go back to books

Diversity is spawned by people searching for new ideas and techniques to use when they find that established methods are not compatible with their desired goals. That is how I developed the technique for creating strip-pieced landscapes. For several years I enjoyed creating whimsical appliqued country scenes. Then, when I attempted to create more sophisticated landscapes through this technique, I found that the artistic effects I sought eluded me. I was disappointed that I couldn't accomplish in fabric what I envisioned in my mind. When I realized that my mind was determined to resolve this technical design problem, the slow journey toward a solution began. Through trial and error, I devised a method to accomplish the desired effect.     Over sixteen years has passed since my quest began. I have enjoyed creating my own interpretations of the world in fabric. This method is now widely used by textile artists and quiltmakers throughout the world. Landscape quilts have become an exciting new genre; less than a decade ago, most people had never seen a landscape quilt.     Due to the unbelievable interest in landscape quilts, I wrote the book Landscapes and Illusions-- Creating Scenic Imagery with Fabric in 1990. It is a collection of ideas, discoveries, observations, as well as basic information for creating beautiful fabric landscapes through strip-piecing. I hope that this book will guide you in your own exploration of creating landscapes.     There are 96 pages, 46 color plates, 14 lessons and exercises, and 10 scaled patterns to use or modify in creating your own fabric landscapes.
